Managing Social Purpose Driven Organizations ― Looking at the Third Sector

This book looks at the management and organization of charitable organizations in Singapore during the first decade of 21st century through 10 case studies of specific charities or volunteer welfare organizations, a term sometimes applied to a subset of non-profit organizations in Singapore. It explores organizational and management issues encountered by charities and volunteer welfare organizations in Singapore.

The cases were the outcomes of field studies and secondary research conducted on such organizations. Through interviews, site observations and secondary research, the book studies these cases which had been framed to enable the exploration of management and organizational issues as experienced and acted upon in such organizations. The book illuminates the understanding the inter-relationships of contexts, actions and outcomes among the organizations, their stakeholders and external environments.

This book will be of interest to those who actively engage in the research, teaching, and practice of the management of charities and non-profit organizations and management practitioners.

Wee Beng Geok is Associate Professor (Strategy, Management and Organization) at the Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University. She teaches leadership and human capital management courses for post-graduate programmes at the Business School and also run management and strategy workshops and courses for the non-profit sector in Singapore.

She received her Bachelor degree in business administration from the University of Singapore, her MBA from Cranfield School of Management and her PhD in Management Systems and Sciences from the University of Hull.

She set-up the Asian Business Case Centre at the business School in 2000 and is currently the Director of the centre. She held functional as well as general management positions in various firms and corporations in Singapore and was also faculty member of the School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, NTU, where she taught management courses from 1987 to 1994.

She is currently an independent board member of Raffles Medical Group Ltd, a healthcare firm listed in the Singapore Stock Exchange.
