The works of Walt Whitman (1819-1892) have been described as masculine, feminine, postcolonial, homoerotic, urban, organic, unique, and democratic. While he is widely accepted as the father of free verse, not all scholars agree on Whitman's understanding of democracy. John E. Seery, professor of politics at Pomona College, is the author of America Goes to College: Political Theory for the Liberal Arts and Political Theory for Mortals: Shades of Justice, Images of Death, as well as coeditor of The Politics of Irony: Essays in Self-Betrayal.
