Globalization and Labour in China and India: Impacts and Responses

Globalization has pushed China and India to the centre of the stage but what has been the impact on workers in these countries? This book demonstrates the complexity of the processes and responses at play. There are signs that both states are shifting their role in a 'counter movement from above'. But will this be enough to quell the social unrest?

PAUL BOWLES is Professor of Economics and International Studies at the University of Northern British Columbia, Canada. His research interests are globalization, the political economy of China and global finance. Recent books include National Currencies and Globalization: Endangered Specie?, National Perspectives on Globalization (co-edited, Palgrave Macmillan, 2007) and Regional Perspectives on Globalization (co-edited, Palgrave Macmillan 2007).

JOHN HARRISS is Director of the School for International Studies at Simon Fraser University, Canada, and a former Director of the Development Studies Institute at the London School of Economics, UK. His research interests are focussed on the politics and political economy of India, and he is the author (with Stuart Corbridge) of Reinventing India.
