In recognition of the growing popularity and acceptance of graphic novels (extended comic books), Carter (U. of Virginia) presents ten essays that explore the possibilities for utilizing this literary form in English language arts instruction. Each paper draws connections between graphic novels and more traditional texts and presents them as a means of building student literacies. For example, Will Eisner's Fagin the Jew and the Charles Dicken's classic Oliver Twist are explored in terms of building critical literacy about anti-Semitism. Other pairings include graphic novel and the old English versions of Beowulf, Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and Katharine Arnoldi's The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom, Young Adult Novels and the autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis depicting Marjane Satrapi's childhood in Iran, and Dante's Inferno and a comic book storyline depicting the X-Men superhero team traveling through Hell.
