Busting the myth that young people are apathetic about civic engagement, this collection of 13 original essays considers how to provide young people with opportunities for civic learning, and how to address disparities in civic education between poor and wealthier communities. Essays are grouped by themes related to youth and schools, political environments in neighborhoods and cities, and policy models from other nations. Some topics discussed are promoting discussion of controversial political issues, civic participation in urban adolescents, local political parties and young voters, and city government as an enabler of youth civic engagement. Material was developed in a series of meetings held at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York through its US Democracy Program. Youniss teaches psychology at the Catholic University of America. Levine directs the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University.
