Jean Ricardou's novels are not well known in the United Slates, which is a shame: his intricate, maddening, brilliant fiction - born in the waning days of the New Novel but soon striking out in far quirkier directions - is one of the undiscovered delights of twentieth-century French literature. Nowhere does Ricardou play more wildly or more accessibly than in Place Names, a convoluted tale told in curiously mannered prose, pitting novels against guidebooks, words against things, ant against ant. A "theoretical" novel that treats theory and novels with the same cheery scepticism, Place Names represents, in Ricardou's words, not "the writing of an adventure" but "the adventure of a writing." At the same time, with its endless complexities, strange elegance, and dryly arch humor, it offers its readers a jubilant adventure of their own.
作者簡介
Born in 1932, Jean Ricardou began his literary career in the context of the New Novel, with L’Observatoire de Cannes (1963), but soon began to push the New Novel into the realm of postmodernism, with such experimental works as La Prise de Constantinople(1965), Le Theatre des metamorphoses (1982), and La Cathedrale de Sens (1988). He has also written extensively on the theory of the New Novel, and for many years has directed an annual colloquium at Cerisy-la-Salle, France, devoted to the problems of textual theory.
