The granddaughter of a prominent and wealthy politician from Recife has disappeared, together with her girlfriend. For Chief Inspector Mario Silva's boss, no case could be more important due to the political implications, so Silva and his team are told to make this seemingly trivial case of apparent runaways a priority investigation.
The trail leads from the beach at Recife - from which Maria and her somewhat older girlfriend were lured by promises of modeling careers - to Manaus, a jungle hellhole on the Amazon. Maria is being held captive in a bordello where no one believes her claims that she is the daughter of a prominent family. But unlike the other girls there, who have submitted to their fate, Maria is intransigent; she will not service men even if she is punished for her defiance. Her principal concern is the whereabouts of her girlfriend who has vanished.
Silva and his team must overcome the obstacles set in his path by his own department of the Brazilian Federal Police as well as the corruption of local cops before he can obtain a semblance of justice.

作者簡介
Leighton Gage is married to a Brazilian woman and spends part of each year in Santana do Parnaiba, Brazil, and the rest of the year in Florida and The Netherlands. He is the author of two novels in the Chief Inspector Mario Silva series.
