A descendant of the Heyward family, Hollis convinced her relatives to donate a considerable number of family papers to the existing Heyward collection in the University of South Carolina's library, and in return the library assembled a team to select, transcribe, annotate and manage the publication of this one-volume edition of letters, with Hollis as the chief editor. The emphasis of the editing process has been an accurate, intelligible presentation of the documents as bearers of information, rather than as artifacts of which the peculiarities should be represented in type. The aristocratic family built its wealth on rice and slaves. Biographical sketches are provided for the Clinch and Heyward family members mentioned. Footnotes clarify references and explain contexts.
