Writing National Cinema traces the twenty-year publication run of the Peruvian film journal Hablemos de cine alongside the history of local filmmaking and film culture from the 1960s to the beginning of the twenty-first century. The first book-length study of Peruvian cinema to appear in English, Middents' work offers thoughtful consideration of the impact of criticism on the visual stylings of a national cinema from the Hablemos de cine's inception, through the growing authority of critics and the rise of local filmmaking and nationalism in the 1960s and early 1970s to the emergence of influence in other mediums in the mid 1970s. As a result, by the 1980s, the critics at Hablemos de cine helped to engender a commercial, Hollywood-influenced cinematic vision, best exemplified through Peruvian auteur Francisco Lombardi, and stimulated a unique, if isolating, national identity through film.
