Directed towards a high school and beginning undergraduate audience, the entries in this 3-volume reference provide basic biographical information, lists of works, and plot synopses of the major works for 136 American and 9 Canadian writers. Few non-Caucasians are included and the general focus is towards canonical writers. Although this is a revised edition, with 25 new authors included since the 2000 original, the revisions are confined to the list of works and not to the plot synopses. So, to take just two examples, no plot synopsis is provided for Joan Didion's Year of magical thinking, from 2005, nor for Thomas Pynchon's 2006 Against the day.
