Without a sociopolitical perspective of dementia, many issues facing people with dementia beyond the care setting get neglected, including those related to socioeconomic status, discriminatory attitudes, public transport, and work. This work draws on a range of disciplines--including critical gerontology, disability studies, feminism, and critical psychiatry--in order to propose a conceptual framework for understanding the sociopolitical issues facing people with dementia and for assessing them in relation to the relevance of a social citizenship lens for elevating status and recognition of rights of people with dementia.
