This is a book that renders a person speechless for awhile. It represents an exhibition organized by Herschdorder, a photography historian and curator, during her association with the Musee de l''Elysee in Lausanne, Switzerland. Roughly 30 photographers are featured. Each is introduced in a brief essay, which is followed by several pages of images. The theme is human suffering--depicted in aftermath. Disasters and tragedies from all over the world are represented in a manner that invites engagement through understatement and respectful acknowledgment that much of the story need not be explicitly stated. Brief essays by affiliates of the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences, U. of Geneva offer commentary on stigma, the emotional impact of photos, the term victim, and the impact on mind and body of traumatic experiences, among other topics.
