Lorenzo Valla's (1407-1457) wrote Dialectical Disputations to refute Aristotleian logic and introduce a commonsense approach to semantics and argument. The present volume is the first of two and contains Valla's Book I, addressing categories, transcendental, and predicables and discussing natural and moral philosophy and theology. The two editor/ translators are affiliated as follows: Brian P. Copenhaver (history and philosophy, UCLA) and Lodi Nauta (history of philosophy, University of Groningen, the Netherlands.
