In 13 papers from a conference held in Mainz, Germany in July 2010, scholars from Europe and the US discuss the foundation of Yom Kippur in Leviticus and its reception in Early Judaism, the New Testament, Early Christianity, and Jewish liturgy. Their topics include the formulary of atonement in penitential prayers of the Second Temple Period, the Day of Atonement in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Yom Kippur in Josephus, the Day of Atonement of the Samaritans, Pauline theology on the Day of Atonement in the mirror of Early Jewish thought, and the inauguration of Yom Kippur according to the Septuagint and its cessation or perpetuation according to the Book of Hebrews.
