International and Foreign Legal Research ─ A Coursebook

Hoffman (associate director of the Law Library at the U. of California's Berkeley School of Law) and Rumsey (a foreign and international comparative law librarian at the U. of Minnesota) provide guidance on how to conduct foreign, international, and comparative law research. They open by addressing basic concepts, types of legal materials used in research, finding English translations, and effective web research. They then discuss secondary sources of commentary and analysis, describing the offerings of bibliographies, legal encyclopedias, journal literature, and other scholarly publications. Next they describe the research tools available for investigating both international law and international institutions. Finally, they offer chapters on selected international topics including human rights, international criminal law, intellectual property, international environmental law, international trade law, private international law, international commercial arbitration, and international courts and tribunals. Marci Hoffman (M.L.I.S. UC-Berkeley, 1989), is the Associate Director of the Law Library at Berkeley Law. She has published several works on foreign and international legal research, including International Legal Research in a Nutshell (with Robert Berring). Mary Rumsey (J.D., University of Chicago, 1984; M.L.I.S., Domincan University, 1998) is the Foreign, Comparative & International Law Librarian at the University of Minnesota. Recent publications include Vulnerable and Marginalised Groups and Human Rights (co-edited with David Weissbrodt, 2011).
