Over the past 20 years, the focus of protecting the genetic diversity of crop plants has shifted from preserving specimens in seed banks--ex situ--to farms and reserves--in situ. It was in this context that the conference "Towards the Establishment of Genetic Reserves for Crop Wild Relatives and Landraces in Europe" was held at Funchal, Portugal during September 2010. This volume contains the proceedings of that gathering, the 43 papers covering the genetic reserve conservation of crop wild relatives, on-farm conservation of landraces, setting priorities and assessing threats, in situ data management, and policy implications and implementation of in situ plant genetic resource conservation. Seven of the papers were invited to flesh out the volume, and discuss such topics as the interactive characterization of the Scottish Avena stigosa Schreb, landraces in the Outer Hebrides, the de novo synthesis of new crop landraces, and on-farm conservation activities in six European countries.
