They were household help and laborers, children, and once in a while a "gent" or "lady." Whole families would claim they were going from Aberdeen, Liverpool, Cardiff or Queenstown to Boston or New York boldly proclaiming themselves to be farmers, servants or skilled workers, and perhaps some even had the goods to back up the talk. Mostly they were from there and coming here in the cheapest way possible, eldest daughters to become maids and send their scanty wages home for the younger, or fit young men charged with providing for those they left behind.
