Originally from Ghana, Tsey (education for social sustainability, James Cook U., Australia) uses oral history to examine the concept of development and how citizens of the rural Ghanaian community Botoku sought to achieve development, and the challenges and opportunities they encountered over the years. By development he means improving the material, social, cultural, and spiritual living conditions of the ancestral home. He uses a simple story-telling approach so the account would be accessible to lay readers in Africa and elsewhere, as well as development theorists and policy makers. Among his topics are from road building in the 1930s to middle school in the 1950s, culture as two-edged sword, making a living through economic participation, and an integrated model of development.
