Modern universities have experienced remarkable growth in terms of access. Some countries approach almost 100 percent of tertiary enrollment. In addition, academic research has grown exponentially in the knowledge society. Notwithstanding these growths, contemporary universities are confronted with critical challenges. The modern university started as an innovative model - a research-driven teaching and service model in the 19th century -, but the contemporary university is in a crisis of identity.
The major challenge is how to harmonize different missions, e.g., teaching, research, and service. Nowadays, universities concentrate more on research to cope with world-class university and global rankings. The triple function - teaching, research, and service - has become questionable and research now dominates the other two functions. The university is in an identity crisis as a social institution of teaching. Few policy makers and university administrators recognize that we are at the point of entering another stage of university development in the 21st century. This book takes a step towards further academic and policy discussions on the future of the university.
