Question 51 to 55 are based on the following interview.
W: Like me, youve probably always believed that diamonds--those gorgeous, brilliant,shining jewels--are precious because theyre both beautiful and rare. Its the demandfor rare gems that makes them expensive. Well, the author of The Death of theDiamond is an American writer and journalist, Edward J. Epstein and, when I methim in his apartment in New York earlier this year, he soon put me right on a fewthings.
M: Diamonds are not rare at all. Theyre one of the most common minerals in the crustof the Earth. In fact, if you think about it, there are more diamonds in America, orEngland, than any other commodity, except for a television set. There are morediamonds than cars. There are more diamonds than families with children. There aremore diamonds than dishwashers or other appliances. Almost every family, at least inAmerica, has a diamonds.
W: If thats so, why is it that diamonds should be so expensive?
M: Well, diamonds are expensive because theres a monopoly that has tried to fix theprice of diamonds and they charge a rent for getting married. Its marriage rent.Because you think its symbolic and important for the marriage, youre willing to buya little pebble that you wouldnt buy in a store if you werent getting married, and pay＄1,000. Its sort of a private marriage license.
W: Edward Epsteins book is an expose of that monopoly. The corporation in question isDe Beers, the South African company that exercises extraordinary control over theworlds diamonds. There are many strange and unexpected twists to the story. Forinstance, diamonds are found in many places in the world; there have recently beenbig finds in Australia, for example. But, De Beers main suppliers outside SouthAfrica are, surprisingly, the Russians and, as is better known, Black African states,such as Zaire, Angola and Tanzania. De Beers policy for dealing with these unlikelyallies is very simple.
