Twenty-two articles, presented by Saunders (social and cultural anthropology, Catholic U. of Leuven, the Netherlands) and van Brakel (philosophy, Catholic U. of Leuven), examine material, political, and social historical concerns as they have impinged on the practice of color science. Noting that recent work in color science has begun to reject the notion of isomorphy (in which each domain of color can be reduced to domains below), the articles work towards heterogeneous explanations of color science by examining the values implicit in various praxes. Rejecting much of the Platonic-Cartesian-Kantian framework of brain sciences, the authors grapple with theories of Clifford Geertz and others who problematize the anthropological aspects of the development of color science.
