The Purge of the Thirtieth Division is the WWII memoir of the Late Major General Henry Dozier Russell (1889-1972). It chronicles the roles of the Regular Army soldiers and the National Guardsmen focusing on September 16, 1940 to May 1942, when Russell was relieved as division commander. Intended as an indictment of the Regular Army establishment, Russell aims to prove that Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall and Commander of Army Ground Forces Lt. General Lesley J. McNair were intent on discrediting the National Guard in order to promote their objective of universal military training and a larger professional army after the War. Before U.S. entry into WWII, 18 National Guard division commanders trained and led more than 300,000 men who were slated for the European and Pacific theaters. Russell posits that the National Guard officers given the boot prior to deployment were just as capable as their Regular Army peers.
