In a revision of her April 2013 doctoral dissertation at the University of Cologne, Gather analyzes the phenomenon of syntactic dislocation in English congregational song from the 16th century to the 19th in order to examine its development and discover its motivations. She confirms that this feature is an essential characteristic of the genre and that poetic factors such as meter and rhyme can be assumed as primary causes. She also demonstrates considerable difference in degree of syntactic dislocation between the two major subgenres of metrical psalms and hymns. 作者簡介
Kirsten Gather graduated in Musicology, English philology, and Theatre, Film, and Television studies at the University of Cologne. She works as a researcher at the English department of the University of Cologne. Her research interests include historical linguistics, corpus linguistics and hymnology.
