Black Males and Intercollegiate Athletics ─ An Exploration of Problems and Solutions

Education, equity and inclusion, and other researchers from the US present 14 essays on the issues black males face as student-athletes in colleges, and as administrators and academic support staff, and recommendations and solutions to them. They explore how to counsel and advise black male high school student-athletes; recruiting techniques and the sociological, institutional, and athletic factors involved; academic support programs; the role and challenges faced by black male support staff; black male student-athletes' academic and athletic experiences at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and on predominantly white college campuses; and the differences between NCAA's principles and goals and the lived realities of these student-athletes. Other essays examine the college athlete supply chain and its impact on black males and issues involved where revenue has taken precedence over their college experiences; academic and athletic identity and the ability to transfer life skills to future occupations; the use of black masculinity in sexual violence prevention; black male faculty as mentors; the impact of athletics involvement on career development; a program to help athletes develop post-graduation career options; and legal and financial realities when transitioning in and out of professional sports.
