Victims of psychological violence inhabit a contentious space. Socially constructed and dictated by social relationships and processes, the term violence has imbedded within it an implicit judgement that actions, events or circumstances are both harming and objectionable. Consequently, behaviour which is deemed to fall under the umbrella of violence is both historically and situationally contingent. This book argues that there is a need to move beyond established narratives shaping responses to psychological injury arising from abuse in the workplace.
Moving beyond the framework of self-regulation and generalist deterrence which has dominated contemporary writing in this field, this book challenges the way harm and violence in the workplace has been conceptualised, translated into law and presented in organisational and management discourse. Emerging from this discussion is the extent to which procedural justice remains problematic and compromises the capacity for effective prevention. This book opens up a debate for a different approach to understanding and responding to the problem of victimisation at work.
