Youth are assets, who, when they develop positively, benefit their families, communities, and societies. Tremendous benefits accrue from positive development for youth, to youth themselves as well as their communities and beyond, so investments in youth represent a highly cost-effective opportunity for positive change. This volume is the first to focus globally on the effects on youth of social and economic change. It also is the first to focus on the opportunity to support youth through policy, programs and interventions to develop positively despite challenges.
The volume gathers research from many countries around the world demonstrating youth assets and resilience as well as programs/interventions that increase that likelihood that youth will thrive despite challenges. Chapters focus on the promotion of optimal youth development in the presence of adversity, risk or challenge taking into consideration the potential and capacity of the young person. The influence of ecological system theory is also evident in many chapters that examine the interrelationship of different social contexts such as family, peers, school and work.
This volume on positive youth development, that recognizes contextual variability in youths’ experience, is both a vision and an ideology with a new international vocabulary for engaging with youth development. The volume has enormous policy implications, especially with the emerging youth bulge in many parts of the world.

Frosso Motti-Stefanidi is Professor of Psychology at the University of Athens, Greece.
Silvia H. Koller is Professor of Psychology at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil.
Suman Verma is the former Head of the Department of Human Development and Family Relations in the Government Home Science College, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India.
