The book identifies the trails and tells the history of the land and the spooky tale. It also identifies the location, gives some brief hike spec information (distance, difficulty, etc.), and identifies the trailhead GPS, if applicable—but that’s it. The book won’t take you on a mile-by-mile journey throughout each hike—you’re on your own for that one, if you dare to step foot on these haunted trails.

Maren Horjus is the destinations editor at Backpacker magazine. An avid outdoorswoman, she has written for a variety of publications, including Skiing, Mountain Magazine, and Squaw Magazine. She lives in Boulder, Colorado.
