Mason (political science, U. of North Texas) analyzes the causes of rural-based revolutions in Third World nations. Integrating theories of relative deprivation, resource mobilization, and rational choice, he asks what factors would cause an otherwise "politically inert" peasant to take up arms against the government. In addition to examining the creation of aggrieved peasant populations through changes in land use and land tenure patterns, he explores the role of revolutionary leaders drawn from urban professional classes, the institutional capacity of the state to respond to grievances with reform, the role of state violence in suppressing or enhancing popular support for revolution, and rebel and government choices that encourage and discourage negotiated settlement.
