商品簡介

What makes a city resilient? Cities, rich or poor, are particularly vulnerable, and will increasingly be affected by anomalous climate change, natural catastrophe and urban stresses including chronic food and water shortages, population migration, high unemployment, or endemic violence. The Rockefeller Foundation defined resilience as ‘the capacity to bounce back from a crisis, learn from it, and achieve revitalization. A community needs awareness, diversity, integration, the capacity for self-regulation, and adaptiveness to be resilient’.

The Smartcity is the innovative response to unchecked city growth from one of the world’s leading urban design thinkers. An ecological symbiosis between nature, society and the built form, this new urban paradigm questions whether we can re-cast the city from first principles, with its inhabitants at the forefront. Reframing the way people think about the urban green evolution, the Smartcity explores instead the potential of ecological landscape interventions that address the transformation opportunities of the resilience movement, cultivating new spatial practices and social cohesion in addition to sustainability and food for our tables.

This second edition, Smartcities and Eco-warriors: The Ecological Landscapes for Urban Resilience, reflects CJ Lim’s latest research since the original publication. It features:

  • an introduction to the second edition
  • six additional case studies located in the UK, USA, Malaysia and China
  • a new extensive catalogue of floral and fauna for each landscape and environmental condition
  • divergent positions and pictorial essays
  • over 375 full colour illustrations

It is indispensible reading for students and practitioners in the fields of urban planning and landscape, architecture, agriculture and sociology. An inspiration to government agencies and NGOs dealing with climate change and resilience, this book will resonate with anyone concerned about cities, urban landscapes and the future of food production.
