The book explores Uno's two basic levels of analysis for political economy: the genriron (the theory of fundamental principles or the theory of a 'purely capitalist society') and the dankairon (the theory of the stages of capitalist development). Uno's work is extended by Sekine's particular focus on the 'ex-capitalist transition', with a discussion of topics ranging from global banking to the history of socialist states. It outlines Sekine's unique contribution to theories of money and the welfare state, his engagement with other key socialist economists, and his interpretation of the history of capitalism after WWI, taking up and developing Uno's work on how best to analyse capitalism for the purposes of socialist revolution.
