我們的思維模式(mindsets)，會決定我們對孩子說話的方式。什麼是思維模式？感謝斯坦福大學的心理學和社會學教授――卡羅爾‧德韋克博士的研究為我們提供了答案。她的理論也正在轉變社會大眾看待學習和心智的觀念。德韋克(2006)的研究描述了一套信念系統，即成長型思維模式(growth mindset)。成長型思維模式是一種堅信心智可以不斷得到發展的思維傾向。具有成長型思維模式的父母相信孩子可以不斷取得更高的成就――只要肯下功夫，持之以恆，百折不撓。具有成長型思維的學生則明白在學習精進的路上，只要努力，沒有什麼是學不會的。在學習的過程中遭受挫折是常有的事，但是他們懂得，只要努力和堅持就能收穫成長和成功。擁有成長型思維模式的成人和孩子，更關注學習、成長和改進，而不是高分或獎狀，也不在乎是否貌似很“聰明”或有天賦。一個具有成長型思維模式氛圍的家庭，持有每個人都能取得成功的信念。父母和孩子都相信大腦具有可塑性，心智的發展是實踐、堅持、韌性和堅毅的結果。與此相對，德韋克也提出了固定型思維模式(fixed mindset)這一術語。持有固定型思維模式的人相信智力是與生俱來的，是由基因決定的內在因素，認定一個人縱然可以學習新的知識，但他所固有的智力水平卻無法在後天發生改變。持有固定型思維的人認為，先天因素決定了一個人只在某些特定領域表現出“聰明”或天賦，而在另一些領域則沒有。一個持固定型思維的成年人或兒童相信自己無法在某些領域或學科上取得成就，或者因為擔心遇到困難、害怕失敗而不敢嘗試。對於那些不認為自己“聰明”的人來說，這會成為一種自我實現預言。 本書講述的就是，家長如何培養兒童的成長型思維模式，並避開固定型思維模式的陷阱。
