Confronting Modernity in Fin-de-Siecle France situates the body and sexuality at the heart of what it meant to be 'French'. Profoundly sensitive to power and its deployment, the volume contributes to our understanding of the sense of national crisis that emerged during the Third Republic. Masculinity is as rigorously explored as femininity. Central themes include the gendered nature of republicanism, relations of authority between physicians (including psychiatrists) and clerics, and conflicting interpretations of bourgeois codes of honour. The effect is a reinterpretation of this period of French history that also has resonance for the history of the rest of Europe.
作者簡介
ELINOR ACCAMPO is Professor of History at the University of Southern California. She is author of Blessed Motherhood, Bitter Fruit: Nelly Roussel and the Politics of Female Pain in Third Republic France and Industrialization, Family Life, and Class Relations.
CHRISTOPHER E FORTH is the Jack and Shirley Howard Teaching Professor in Humanities & Western Civilization at the University of Kansas. His books include The Dreyfus Affair and the Crisis of French Manhood, Masculinity in the Modern West: Gender, Civilization and the Body, and the co-edited volumes Cultures of the Abdomen: Diet, Digestion and Fat in the Modern World and French Masculinities: History, Culture and Politics.
