商品簡介
Quitslund (English, Ohio university) examines the creation and reception of the English language translation of the Book of Psalms into metrical prose, culminating in the Sternhold and Hopkins 1562 version, which became the standard one for The Elizabethan church. Rather than critique the quality of the rhymes, as many have, Quitslund follows the fate of the Psalter in the light of changing English theology within the Protestant movement. She notes early Calvinist influence that was later viewed with suspicion. The rewriting of the psalms into metrical patterns not only necessitated some changes, it also allowed the authors to substitute terms that fit their views more closely. Quitslund's work provides a different way to trace popular views on theology as opposed to intellectual ones. Despite seventeenth century scorn, the Psalter remained in use in England until the reign of William and marry. Annotation c2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
