商品簡介
This three-volume set geared toward high school students features 107 biocritical essays on a diverse range of poets writing primarily in English from Homer to Basho, from Rilke to Gwendolyn Brooks. In addition, 15 essays in volume three cover historical periods, ethnic groups, poetic types, basic poetic forms, and poetry-writing. Accompanying each biocritical essay is a drawing or photo of the poet, a sample poem (excerpts not uncommon), a selected bibliography of works by and about the poet, and often a website or mailing address for additional information. To appeal to the eyes of high-school students, the type is large, and a great deal of space is allotted to margins some used for definitions, notes, or quoted matter from the essays. (Without the sidebars and with smaller print, World Poets could have been a third fewer pages and bound in two volumes albeit less readable rather than three.) Appendices include lists of holders of distinguished posts (Poet Laureates of England and Consultants to the Library of Congress) and winners of distinguished honors (National Book Award and Pulitzer Prizes). Contributors are poets, English instructors, or both. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
