This collection of research offers an international perspective on child slavery during the period beginning in the abolition era and continuing into the present day. Section 1 looks at the experiences of child slaves in historical times, such as young people's resistance against colonial slavery in the British Caribbean, and the redemption of child slaves by Christian missionaries in Africa 1878-1914. The second part of the book describes the complex forms of child slavery and servitude that persist in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, looking at girls as domestic workers in contemporary France, adolescent prostitutes in Cape Town, and child soldiers. Contributors are human rights advocates and academics in economic history, international development, sociology, and international law. B&w photos and illustrations support the text. 作者簡介

Gwyn Campbell is Canada Research Chair in Indian Ocean World History and Director of the Indian Ocean World Centre at McGill University. Campbell is the author and editor of many works, including Abolition and Its Aftermath in Indian Ocean Africa and Asia and An Economic History of Imperial Madagascar.

Suzanne Miers is professor emerita of history at Ohio University. She is the author of Slavery in the Twentieth Century and coeditor of The End of Slavery and other books.

Joseph C. Miller is the T. Cary Johnson, Jr., Professor in the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia. He is the author of Kings and Kinsmen, Way of Death, and works on the world history of slavery.
