The first section describes the earliest evidence of mining, smelting of iron, steel production, and the difference between steels produced in the Arab and European centers. European swords are then described, in chronological chapters, with many b&w images of swords and their microscopic structure. The invention of the blast furnace and finery and the mass production of steel for swords and armor and their decoration are the subjects of the final section. Alan R.Williams, PhD (1974) in History of Science, University of Manchester, now works as an Archaeometallurgist in the Wallace Collection, London. He has published extensively on the metallurgy of swords and armour and is the author of The Knight and the Blast Furnace (2003)
