Initial chapters discuss pros and cons and practicalities of spirituality and religion in the clinical setting. The body of the book consists of an A to Z arrangement of essays on religions, from American Indian spirituality, the Baha'i faith, and three kinds of Buddhism, to Unitarian Universalism, Voodou and Afro-Atlantic religions, and Zoroastrianism--about 30 religions in all plus a couple dozen Protestant traditions. Each essay has been thoroughly prepared by an expert and covers history, basic teachings, dietary issues, general medical beliefs and specific medical issues, gender and personal issues, principles for support(during birth, illness, and death), organ and tissue donation, and scriptures, inspirational readings, and prayers. Jeffers (d.2008) was founder of the Institute for Spirituality in Health at that institution; Nelson is a physician there; Barnet is religious columnist for the Kansas City Star, and Brannigan (philosophy and religious studies) is affiliated with The College of Saint Rose in New York.
