This is the report of an ad hoc committee convened by the Institute of Medicine, at the request of the National Institutes of Health, in order to consider the necessity of the use of chimpanzees in NIH-funded public health research. The committee was asked only to address the relevance of chimpanzees as an animal model to specific biomedical and behavioral research issues and not the cost or ethical implications of using chimpanzees, although they volunteer that that the genetic proximity of chimpanzees to humans make it a valuable species for certain types of research but does demand greater justification for using them as an animal model.
