This pocket-sized paperback is one of the twenty-two titles published for 2015 Hong Kong International Poetry Nights. The theme of IPHHK2015 is “Poetry and Conflict”. 21 international poets from 18 different places are invited to participate in recitations, symposia and sharing sessions of the Poetry Nights. A recitation focusing on 10 local Hong Kong poets, “Hong Kong Cantonese Poetry Night” is included. This collection seeks to make accessible the best of contemporary international poetry with outstanding translations.

Peter Cole’s most recent book of poems is The Invention of Influence (New Directions, 2014). His many volumes of translation include The Poetry of Kabbalah: Mystical Verse from the Jewish Tradition (Yale, 2012) and The Dream of the Poem: Hebrew Poetry from Muslim and Christian Spain, 950–1492 (Princeton, 2007). Cole has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Jewish Book Award for Poetry, the PEN Translation Award for Poetry, and an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2007.

I’m partial to what’s possible,

he thought-not the ineffable,

distant, devoid of insistence

and temperament that tampers,

or tramples

Not the impersonal,

but that which hovers here

between the "I'' of the opening

and the "us" of your possible listening

now, or in the imperfect

tense and tension of what

in fact articulates the eternal

That abstract revelation

and slippery duration

to which, it seems, I’m given

and because of which I’m never

finished with anything, as though living

itself were an endless translation
