本書原作者有兩位，第一位Kay Bradway是容格學派分析師，也是舊金山容格學會、國際沙遊治療學會(ISST)、及美國沙遊治療師學會(STA)的創始會員；第二位Barbara McCoard為容格學派的精神科醫師，也是「沙遊治療期刊」(The Journal of Sandplay Therapy)的諮詢編輯。全書共分為理論、象徵及案例三大部份。 第一部份從歷史脈絡探討沙遊治療何以有效，作者深入淺出的進行沙遊治療的歷史回顧、比較Estelle Weinrib、Ruth Ammann及Joel Ryce-Menuhin等三位學者對沙遊治療的重要觀點、探討何謂沙遊治療中的共移情(co-transference)、比較重視經驗的沙遊治療(sandplay)與重視表達的沙盤治療(sandtray)有何不同、以及討論沙遊治療的進行、詮釋、適用對象及沙圖層次、階段、和主題的瞭解。 第二部份探討沙遊治療中極重要的象徵研究，討論烏龜、穚、太陽、月亮、赫斯提雅及雅典娜兩位希臘女神的象徵，另外亦探討兒童在沙遊治療中的發展階段。 第三部份列舉十位實際的沙遊治療案例，以圖文交錯的方式詳細探討其進行歷程。兩位作者具有深厚的沙遊治療臨床基礎，全書文字簡潔，內容精要，是學習沙遊治療理論與實務不可缺少的好書。本書所有譯者及校閱者皆曾參與沙遊治療的個人歷程，並實際從事沙遊治療的實務工作，大大提昇本譯文的可信度及可讀性。
