Kuo-Chang Huang

Kuo-Chang Huang is a civil procedure scholar. After his graduation from National Taiwan University in 1995, Dr. Huang Joined TIPLO, a major law firm in Taipei, and practiced law for two years. Thereafter he went to Cornell Law School and obtained his LL.M and J.S.D. degrees there. During the period at Cornell, Dr. Huang was appointed as Rudolf B. Schlesinger Fellow for 1999-2000, received three CALI awards, and clerked for Hon. Monserrate of New York Supreme Court. He also went to Japan and conducted research in the University of Kaohsiung and taught civil procedure course at other universities as well. He also authored a good number of articles and books in Taiwan as well as in the United States. He joined Academia Sinica as Junior Fellow in August 2006. His scholarship includes civil procedure, evidence, international litigation and empirical legal studies.

Richard Lawton Thurston

Dr. Thurston is Vice President and General Counsel of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd., headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, ROC.
Dr. Thurston graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. degree in History from Alma College (Michigan, USA), and a M.A. degree and ph.D. degree in East Asian Studies from University of Virginia (Virginia, USA). He received a J.D. degree from Rutgers School of Law at Camden, New Jersey in the U.S. in 1980. Dr. Thurston also studied R.O.C. Law at Soochow University, 1975-1976, while researching his ph.D. dissertation: Civil Law Reform in China, 1906-1930. As a bilingual professional, Dr. Thurston is fluent both in English and in Mandarin. He also taught courses in Entrepreneurism at the Southern Methodist School of Law and the School of Management, University of Texas, both in Dallas, Texas, U.S.A. Since September 2002, Dr. Thurston teaches law courses in Soochow University and National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan.
