CBT for Psychosis: A Symptom-Based Approach

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) emphasizes the role of dysfunctional beliefs in the formation and maintenance of psychiatric disorders. Hagen (psychology, Norwegian U. of Science and Technology, Trondheim) introduces the application of a symptom-focused paradigm for treating symptoms of psychosis including paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations with CBT. International contributors to 17 chapters discuss cognitive models of psychosis, assessment, and evolving research; the importance of early intervention; CBT for treating co-morbid conditions, e.g., psychosis and substance abuse, and bipolar disorders; and vocational rehabilitation. Barriers to applying CBT to psychosis are noted. Some of the material is based on Toward a New Understanding of Psychosis published in 2007 by the Journal of the Norwegian Psychological Association.
