A Violent World: TV News Images of Middle Eastern Terror and War

This is a paperbound reprint of a 2006 book. Ben-Shaul (film and television, Tel Aviv U., Israel) analyzes how the different ideological frames of the core elites of the United States and the dependent periphery national elites of Israel and the Palestinian National Authority are embedded in how respective their mainstream television news outlets report on violence linked to the direct core-periphery conflict between the US and al Qaeda and the indirect one of the al Aqsa Intifada. In the interest of showing how dominant ideologies are embedded in television coverage of terrorist attacks and "reciprocal constitutional violence," he also proposes a critical model for analyzing the discursive strategies of the audiovisual elements of television news, which often tend to overwhelm verbal commentary.
