商品簡介

The American decision to commit political and, later, military support to Southern Vietnamese leader Ngo Dinh Diem, argues Jacobs (history, Boston College), was the most fundamental decision of US involvement in Vietnam and was the prerequisite to both the Vietnam War and its outcome. He traces the "Diem experiment" from Diem's first meetings with Truman administration Secretary of State Dean Acheson through its end in the form of the American-sponsored military coup that resulted in Diem's 1963 assassination. Jacobs focuses primarily on American perceptions of Diem and how this influenced their decision making towards Vietnam. Annotation c2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
