Beginning his story with the establishment of the Brooklyn Excelsiors in 1855, Terry (social science librarian, New York U.) chronicles the development of baseball from the activity of gentleman's amateur clubs to the professionalization of the sport heralded by the 1883 arrival of the Brooklyn Grays, later to be known as the Dodgers. The major focus is on the changing economics of the game and the tensions arising from the changing nature of the sport, but other topics include reflections on race and gender issues and brief biographies of some of the early baseball "stars."
