Intrigued by accounts of accidents in nineteenth-century newspapers, she considers why they were so graphic, how the injured workers coped, the development of the system of workers' compensation, the cultural meanings of these accidents, and the difference in the British system by which the claims of those injured were asserted and acknowledged.
