Editor Allin (Cornell College) has marshaled resources to bring substantial changes and enhancements to this revised edition, adding some 300 new articles (bringing the total to 772) and revising or replacing old articles. Online access is included with purchase. Entries are arranged alphabetically in four volumes. The fourth contains a category index and a subject index as well as appendixes offering information about organizations, a biographical dictionary, US federal laws, US national parks, world national parks and protected areas, time line, glossary, and bibliography). Coverage includes overviews of broad concepts, biographies, events, treaties and legislation, and organizations and movements. Ranging in length from about half a page to several pages, each entry is signed and includes cross references and further reading lists (all updated). Each topic is summarized at its head with a brief description and statement of significance. Line-drawn maps and b&w photos enhance the presentation.
