Engaging in Evaluation and Assessment Research

Hernon (library and information science, Simmons College) et al. introduce evaluation and assessment research to library managers and students and its use in planning, decision making, and accountability to improve the quality of library programs and services or its infrastructure. Drawing from research within and outside library and information science, they overview the research process and its activities, including reflective inquiry, adoption of appropriate procedures, quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, and presenting findings. They explain design, statistics, and creating a culture of evidence gathering and managerial use, and offer a checklist of tips drawn from their and others' experiences. Robert E. Dugan is dean of libraries at University of West Florida, Pensacola, FL. He has written extensively on the application of information technologies outcomes assessment, financial management, and planning.

Danuta A. Nitecki is dean of libraries and professor in the College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. She writes on topics such as service quality, document delivery, and the impact of digital images on teaching and learning.
