Integrating African American Literature in the Library and Classroom

This work for teachers and school librarians collects 200 recommended titles related to African American life, history, and major figures. Most of the books are by African American authors. The titles are grouped into 20 chapters on various themes, including the arts, sports, civil rights, scientists, slavery, youth issues, and a final chapter of winners of the Coretta Scott King Book Award. Each chapter spotlights 3-6 specific titles, offering brief summaries, discussion starters, ideas for classroom activities and crafts, and worksheets. Most of the activities are geared toward elementary or middle grade students. The chapters close with lists of relevant websites for students and for teachers, and brief summaries of 20-30 additional books on the chapter's topic.
