Most Roman imperial statues were made of bronze and so were melted down at the first opportunity to sell for the valuable scrap metal. Therefore, the extensive studies of the statuary rely almost entirely on the stone ones. Hojte offers a broader view of who was commemorated, where, when, and why, by surveying the bases that the purloined images stood upon. Drawing on 2,300 known bases from nearly 800 sites, he looks at the geographical distribution, statues dedicated before and after a reign, occasions for statue erections, and dedicators. A massive catalogue takes up two thirds of the volume. The study is expanded from his 2001 Ph.D. dissertation for the University of Aarhus. Distributed in the US by The David Brown Book Co.
